Fleet engineers with the Livermore Amador Valley Transit Authority (LAVTA) placed the agency's first four forty-foot zero-emission hydrogen fuel-cell electric buses into weekday commuter service on Friday morning following final safety certifications at the Rutan Drive Maintenance and Operations Facility in Livermore. Approved by the LAVTA Board of Directors as the cornerstone of the agency's 2040 Innovative Clean Transit rollout, the New Flyer Xcelsior Charge H2 coaches will operate primarily along Rapid Route 10R and Route 30R linking the Livermore Transit Center, Las Positas College, downtown Pleasanton, Stoneridge Mall, and the Dublin/Pleasanton BART station. Unlike battery-only buses that require multi-hour depot plug-in windows, each fuel-cell coach refills its composite hydrogen cylinders in under twelve minutes and achieves a 320-mile operating range across hilly Tri-Valley arterial routes.

Inside the coaches, an onboard Proton Exchange Membrane fuel-cell module combines compressed green hydrogen with ambient air to generate electricity for the traction motor, emitting only warm water vapor from the tailpipe while cutting cabin noise by more than half compared to legacy diesel-hybrid buses. Riders boarding the new fleet will also find wider low-floor aisles, automated three-position front bike racks, USB-C seat chargers, and high-contrast interior next-stop screens synchronized with BART train arrival countdowns.

To support the initial four coaches and twelve additional fuel-cell buses scheduled for delivery in 2027, LAVTA partnered with the Alameda County Transportation Commission to construct a high-pressure liquid-to-gas hydrogen dispensing island at 1362 Rutan Drive. Sixteen agency mechanics completed a 160-hour high-voltage and gaseous-fuel maintenance certification course taught in collaboration with Las Positas College automotive technology faculty.

The $6.8 million fleet and depot upgrade was funded through Federal Transit Administration Low or No Emission grants paired with California Transit and Intercity Rail Capital Program allocations. Commuters can track real-time Rapid 10R and 30R departures or view zero-emission fleet transition milestones on the Wheels Bus Official Portal.
