What's on in Livermore in May: stage, gallery and Mother's Day weekend
Five performances of The Glass Menagerie with the audience seated onstage, a Mother's Day weekend of comedy and mariachi, and a new exhibit opening May 14.
SPARC Theater's production of Tennessee Williams's The Glass Menagerie opens tonight in the Stage Door Lounge at the Bankhead Theater, and it is gone by Sunday. Five performances, May 1 through May 3.
The seating is the reason to go. Audiences sit onstage with the actors: cafe tables for two make up the front row, with floor and riser seating wrapped around the Wingfield living room on three sides and a small bar open during the show. Gary Armagnac directs. Emilie Talbot plays Amanda Wingfield, Eliot Hall is Tom, Isadora Zucker is Laura, and James Crutcher is Jim, the Gentleman Caller.
Evening performances begin at 7:30 p.m., with 2 p.m. matinees Saturday and Sunday. Tickets run $45 to $75, or $25 for students and military personnel, and groups of 10 or more save 20 percent.
"In a world where so much of our connection happens through devices, there's something profoundly powerful about sharing space with a story like this," Armagnac said in the announcement from Livermore Valley Arts, which is presenting the run with SPARC.
Mother's Day weekend, three ways
The Bankhead books the second weekend of the month end to end.
- God Is A Scottish Drag Queen 2, with Mike Delamont, Friday, May 8 at 8 p.m. Tickets $25 to $60.
- Glen Phillips, lead singer and main songwriter of Toad the Wet Sprocket for almost 40 years, Saturday, May 9 at 8 p.m., with Grammy-nominated producer Garrison Starr opening. Tickets $30 to $40.
- Mariachi Divas de Cindy Shea, two-time Grammy winners, Sunday, May 10 at 3 p.m. Tickets $45 to $75.
Student and military tickets are $25 for all three, and the group discount applies.

"America in Art: 250 Years of Shared Creativity" opens May 14 in the UNCLE Credit Union Art Gallery, in the Bankhead lobby at 2400 First St., and hangs through July 25. It is free, Thursdays through Saturdays, noon to 5 p.m. The opening reception is Saturday, May 16, from 2 to 4 p.m., where artist Jen Huber will paint a red, white and blue still life in front of the room and supplies will be out for anyone who wants to make something. The gallery is closed on Saturdays when a matinee is playing, including June 6, 13 and 20.
