UC Berkeley administration approved converting the Blue Gym from student recreation to a Cal basketball practice facility despite unanimous opposition from the Recreation & Wellbeing Board of Governors.

UC Berkeley moved forward with plans to convert a student recreation gym into a practice facility for Cal men's and women's basketball, overriding unanimous opposition from the student-led board that governs campus recreation policy.

The decision, reported by The Daily Californian, affects the Blue Gym inside the campus Recreational Sports Facility. The gym previously served intramural and club sports. It is now being renovated for basketball using a $10 million commitment from the Lisa and Douglas Goldman Fund.

The Recreation & Wellbeing Board of Governors, a policy committee for the RSF, voted unanimously against the transfer this spring. ASUC officials followed with an open letter to Chancellor Rich Lyons in May objecting to the plan.

"This decision reflects a lack of consideration for the broader student body and the already limited recreational spaces available on-campus," the ASUC letter stated, according to The Daily Californian. The letter also said the administration's move "reflects a disregard for the perspectives of the student leaders and workers who serve on the Board."

UC Berkeley draws students from across the Bay Area, including the Tri-Valley. Dublin, Pleasanton and Livermore families with students at Cal — or considering attending — may want to know how the university allocates campus recreation space.

The numbers on space

UC Berkeley has approximately 2.5 square feet of indoor recreation space per student, according to the RecWell website — one of the lowest ratios in the nation. The national average is about 10 to 13 square feet per student.

What the university offered in return

UC Berkeley spokesperson Dan Mogulof said RecWell will receive a $1 million investment, and existing fees tied to RecWell space in California Memorial Stadium will be eliminated.

"The campus has competing needs for gym facilities on campus, and the decision reflects an effort to balance those needs," Mogulof said in an email to The Daily Californian. He described the arrangement as part of a "broader shared-facility strategy" and said RecWell would have "a defined seat at the table" as the campus evaluates athletics and recreation spaces going forward.

Student leaders call it inadequate

ASUC officials called the exchange of spaces "inappropriate" as a substitute for the lost Blue Gym.

Isha Chander, former ASUC executive vice president and former member of the RecWell Board of Governors, told The Daily Californian the move "was not in the best interest of the general student body."

"It was donor-motivated and I don't know if it was procedurally allowed, but it definitely wasn't in the best interest of students," Chander said.

The RecWell Board of Governors' governing policy dates to 1981. The board sets operating policies around program scheduling and facility usage.

No timeline for the renovation's completion was included in the available reporting. It is unclear whether any formal appeal process exists for students seeking to reverse the decision.
