Contra Costa County Public Works crews began an intensive two-month emergency repair project on October 1, 2026, to reconstruct a badly damaged drainage culvert and stabilize an expanding roadway sinkhole along Springbrook Road near Sherwood Way. The critical infrastructure repair, scheduled to continue through November 30, 2026, will restore roadway integrity and stormwater drainage capacity along a vital neighborhood connector in the unincorporated hills outside Lafayette. County engineers scheduled the construction to protect hillside properties before heavy winter storm runoff arrives.

The construction project requires daily road closures that will alter travel routes for hillside homeowners, municipal delivery drivers, and school commuters throughout the autumn months. While through traffic must follow designated detour routes, county road crews have coordinated localized access protocols to ensure that residents living immediately adjacent to the repair zone experience travel delays of no more than 15 minutes. Emergency response agencies, including local fire and paramedic districts, have established coordinated access plans to maintain continuous emergency coverage across the neighborhood.

Severe winter storm systems in recent years generated unprecedented runoff across Contra Costa County watersheds, causing subterranean soil erosion that compromised aging underground drainage pipes beneath Springbrook Road. The Contra Costa County Board of Supervisors authorized emergency engineering contracts after public works geotechnical surveys confirmed that expanding underground voids threatened to trigger sudden roadway collapse. County public works officials emphasized that modernizing the corrugated culvert with reinforced concrete infrastructure is essential to prevent costly flood damage during future storm seasons.

Construction operations are scheduled from 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM, Monday through Friday, excluding official county holidays and subject to favorable weather conditions. During active working hours, Springbrook Road is fully closed to through traffic between east of Sherwood Way and south of the construction zone. Funding for the major repair project is provided through a strategic partnership between Federal Emergency Relief Funds and Contra Costa County Local Road Funds, with project questions managed by county public works at (925) 313-2000.

Engineering crews will proceed with deep trench excavations, install reinforced concrete culvert piping, and pour structural engineered backfill before resurfacing the roadbed with durable asphalt in late November. Following road repaving, environmental crews will plant native erosion-control vegetation along the drainage banks to prevent future hillside soil erosion. Contra Costa County transportation officials will post weekly progress reports, weather advisories, and detour updates on the county public works department portal.
