Contra Costa County Public Works launched an extensive three-month rehabilitation of the Robert I. Schroder Pedestrian Bridge spanning Treat Boulevard in Walnut Creek on Monday, October 5, redirecting thousands of daily cyclists and pedestrians along the Iron Horse Regional Trail. The major capital renewal project addresses critical structural maintenance on the landmark cable-supported overpass that connects local neighborhoods directly to the Contra Costa Centre BART station. County construction crews are executing active repairs overnight Sunday through Thursday between 9:00 p.m. and 5:00 a.m. to minimize traffic disruptions along the busy East Bay transit arterial.
The temporary span closure impacts hundreds of daily bicycle commuters, morning joggers, and neighborhood families who rely on the grade-separated crossing to avoid heavy vehicular traffic on Treat Boulevard. While the elevated bridge remains closed through the end of December, trail users are being safely rerouted across Treat Boulevard using the existing street-level signalized crosswalk equipped with high-visibility countdown timers. Motorists traveling between Walnut Creek, Pleasant Hill, and Interstate 680 are advised to anticipate minor night delays of up to ten minutes as flaggers guide single-lane traffic past construction equipment.
Dedicated in 2005 and named in honor of longtime Contra Costa County Supervisor and regional transit pioneer Robert I. Schroder, the 200-foot span stands as a vital link along the thirty-two-mile Iron Horse Regional Trail network. After more than two decades of continuous exposure to heavy suburban traffic and environmental weathering, county bridge engineers determined that the elevated structure required comprehensive protective coatings and bearing replacements. Funding for the multi-million-dollar project is provided jointly through Contra Costa County Measure X sales tax revenues and dedicated regional park developer contributions.
The engineering scope encompasses replacing worn elastomeric bearing pads beneath the bridge approach spans, applying high-performance waterproof sealants across the concrete walking deck, and blasting and repainting exposed steel structural cables. Crews will also reconstruct concrete approach curbs and align pedestrian access ramps to ensure full compliance with updated Americans with Disabilities Act standards. County officials noted that four complete overnight roadway closures of Treat Boulevard will be required during crane operations, with through traffic redirected along a five-mile detour via Geary Road and Bancroft Road.
Public works supervisors anticipate completing deck resurfacing and structural painting before seasonal winter storms intensify, allowing the bridge to reopen to active pedestrian traffic prior to New Year's Day. County inspectors will monitor bridge vibration sensors and inspect cable tensioning throughout December before officially lifting trail detours. Commuters and local cyclists seeking real-time project schedules, detour routes, and night closure notices can visit the Contra Costa County Public Works Department portal or telephone the capital projects desk at 925-313-2000.
