Pleasanton Unified Advances Energy Resilience Microgrid at Amador Valley High School
District partners with state energy commission on $2.4M solar-plus-storage installation to power emergency cooling centers during extreme heat events.

The Pleasanton Unified School District Board of Trustees voted on Tuesday to approve a $2.4 million solar-and-battery microgrid installation at Amador Valley High School, creating a self-sustaining emergency power facility capable of operating during utility power shutoffs. Funded in part through a $1.6 million grant from the California Energy Commission's school decarbonization program, the project will install shade canopy solar panels across student parking lots paired with a 1.2-megawatt-hour commercial battery storage system.
The microgrid will automatically isolate the high school campus from the primary electric grid during regional outages, providing continuous electrical power to campus refrigeration, athletic center ventilation, and administrative emergency communications. During extreme summer heat waves or severe wildfire smoke advisories, the school's air-conditioned multi-use gymnasium will serve as a designated municipal cooling and clean-air refuge for vulnerable Pleasanton residents and families.
District facility directors reported that the solar generation will offset approximately 68 percent of Amador Valley High's annual electrical consumption, saving the school district more than $140,000 annually in utility expenses. City of Pleasanton emergency coordinators and Tri-Valley community leaders praised the initiative as a model for public infrastructure resilience that directly benefits both students and the broader neighborhood.
District families, taxpayers, and neighborhood residents can review complete engineering drawings, environmental impact assessments, and projected utility savings online at pleasantonusd.net. Questions regarding campus construction phasing and temporary parking alterations may be directed to the Pleasanton Unified Facilities and Construction Department Monday through Friday at (925) 462-5500. On-site construction is scheduled to begin during the upcoming winter academic recess.
