Livermore police offer free ice cream to 40 safe bicyclists

Livermore police have 40 ice cream coins to give away, and the only way to get one is to be caught riding a bicycle properly.

The department announced the program with Meadowlark Dairy on Wednesday, Sept. 2. Over the next few weeks, motor officers will watch for adults and children practicing safe riding habits. Riders they spot may be handed a Meadowlark Dairy coin good for one free ice cream, redeemed at the dairy.

There is no application and no form. The coins go out on sight, at an officer’s discretion, and the department described the effort as recognition for riders already following the rules of the road rather than as enforcement.

Forty is the whole supply, and the coins are good while supplies last. The notice does not set an end date beyond "the next few weeks," does not say which streets or parts of town the motor officers will be working, and does not say who paid for the coins.
