Livermore opens candidate filing for the Nov. 3 city election

The candidate nomination period for Livermore's Nov. 3 General Municipal Election is open and closes Friday, Aug. 7.

Three seats are on the ballot: mayor, which carries a two-year term, and the District 1 and District 2 council seats, which each carry four-year terms.

There is a wrinkle worth knowing before Aug. 7. If an eligible incumbent does not file nomination papers by the deadline, the nomination period for that seat, and only that seat, extends through Wednesday, Aug. 12. That extra window is why a race can look settled on Aug. 7 and have a new name in it the following week.

To qualify, a candidate must be at least 18, a registered voter, and a resident of Livermore and of the district they seek to represent, where a district applies. Those are state requirements, not rules the city set.

The paperwork is not a walk-in errand. Nomination papers are picked up and submitted by in-person appointment only, during city business hours, and the City Clerk's Office asks for at least 24 hours' notice to schedule one.
