All fireworks are illegal in Livermore today, including safe and sane

Every kind of firework is illegal in Livermore today, including the "safe and sane" kind sold legally a few miles away. The city restated the rule in a notice posted June 24, ahead of the holiday.

The ordinance reaches past the person holding the match. If fireworks are set off on a property and the person who lit them cannot be identified, the property owner or whoever is responsible for the gathering can be held liable. Administrative citations run up to $500.

The city's stated reasons are the familiar ones: injuries, grass and structure fires in a dry July, and the noise, which is hard on pets, on veterans and on neighbors who would rather sleep.

Livermore Police have put additional officers on patrol in the days before and after the Fourth.

For a legal version of the day, the city holds a family celebration at Livermore Municipal Airport from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. today.
